There's working out to look good (and there's nothing wrong with that), there's working out with the objective of being fit and there's a healthy lifestyle. Whatever gets you to the gym and keeps you coming back is good, but at some point one's focus needs to be fitness and health, not just muscle. That means doing more cardio than Arnold or Mentzer (RIP) would recommend (because of loss of mass) and eating well even if you're not overweight. I once knew a pilates instructor who smoked regularly!

Look at Anderson Silva or any MMA or boxing champ, they all have slender bodies and some are not impressive but these guys are in tip top shape. Then look at someone like Roy "Big Country" Nelson or George Foreman; they are/were super fit but very overweight; not healthy. There's nothing wrong with being big and wanting to look good but if you put your focus on health and fitness you might find that your workouts and lifestyle need modifying.
+1

For me, it's practical functional thing: is my life better for it? I like ktrp's way of saying: adding to the gas tank. Another thing I noticed, is that since I've been practicing barefoot running, my feet, calves and the the smaller muscles on the side and front of my shins have become stronger. I now walk with a LOT more balance, and when I stand, my stance is naturally strong and firm. A strong, balanced and skillful body has the nice side effect of promoting an attitude of the same.

GREAT article! i've bookmarked it

i think that one of the reasons that NMMNG is good is that it is extremely practical. i pretty much set sunday evenings aside to do a BFE and read a bit of the book. but because it's so concise and to the point there's no way you can spend all of your time reading it, it's the way it should be. so it's like: "read it, got it, now go and actually do something". as opposed to other blog sites that keep you trapped in and you could read 15 hours of their material and still not fill the hole.

i do love the choice for the woman: choosing between a guy who's had sex or a 50 yr old who's read heaps of blogs on it. lol
